Basketball 2020 COVID-19 Update

By Steve Armijo 03/19/2020, 12:00am PDT

In light of the COVID-19 situation. CYAA has chosen to move its basketball season start date back to May 2, 2020 for Divisions 1 – K and May 8, 2020 for High School Division. This will take our season through June, ending for all divisions the weekend of June 26, 2020. We understand that this situation is fluid and changing daily. It is our intention to keep all our athletes, families and volunteers safe and reduce the risk of any illness or injury. It is our hope that by starting at this later date, the COVID-19 situational risk level will have resolved, and life would start to return to a normal state.

Please use caution and take in mind CYAA’s recommendations when holding a practice. CYAA still recommends all practices be on hold. CYAA recommends practices for all divisions start no earlier than April 18, 2020. If you do hold a practice, please use all precautionary measures to lower the risk to any player and their families. Most public parks and schools have been shut down in the areas of Ontario and Chino through Mid-April or later. We ask that you adhere to this recommendation considering the situation. Our priority is the athletes and their families.

Again, we understand this situation is fluid and changing daily. As developments arise and we are made aware of them we will respond accordingly and as promptly as possible. Remember, God is in control. We may not always understand His vision, but we must trust with faith that He is in control. He carries us through the hardest days even when we don’t feel His presence. He is faithful and trustworthy.

“For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!” “Instead, seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you. Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom” Luke 12:23-24, 31-32 ESV.

CYAA Response to COVID-19

By Steve Armijo 03/12/2020, 5:45pm PDT

CYAA wants to take the utmost precautions when it comes to the health and wellbeing of our Athletes, their parents and families, volunteers and staff. We know that many are concerned about the current COVID-19 (CoronaVirus) pandemic. As we continue to navigate through the COVID-19 situation, we are postponing the start of CYAA Basketball for all divisions until mid-April 2020. We understand how disappointing this may be for the athletes, their families and volunteers who were excited to participate in the next couple of weeks. In everything we do, we must trust God and put the health and safety of our athletes and families first. Nehemiah 8:10 – “Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength”. God’s will is guiding this league in the direction He see. He will see us through this storm and those to come. The CYAA board will meet early April to discuss if there is anymore further action or delays we should take.

Coaches, please use caution and discretion when planning your upcoming team meetings and practices. It is CYAA’s recommendation that practices be delayed a 2 to 3 weeks. Please take the necessary precautions if you do hold a practice either now or after the delay. If anyone is feeling ill or showing any signs of being sick, please stay home. Encourage your players to wash their hands, and sanitize all equipment used for practice.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent the corona virus disease. Below are some common suggestions given by the CDC to help combat COVID-19.

  • Wash your hand regularly and often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Especially after using the restroom; before eating; after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
  • Us an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash with soap if dirt is visible on hands.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw it away in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

I am praying for all of you and the health and welfare of our communities, state and country. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6. As we navigate this next season, let us do it with the mindset of Christ. His steady hand which is unwavering and is always in control.

God Bless,
